Description
AMS Lite Pocket Edition
Overview
AMS Lite Pocket Edition is a compact and versatile version of the AMS Lite, designed to house only the essential components of the filament feeding system: the motors, motherboard, and Filament Funnel Units.
The project is designed to adapt to a wide variety of setups and available space. The Pocket Edition is completely independent from the printer, except for the power/data cable and the PTFE tubes, and supports three main mounting options:
- Top Mount: installed on top of the printer.
- IKEA SKÅDIS Mount: installed on an IKEA SKÅDIS pegboard.
- Wall Mount: installed horizontally or vertically on a wall, wooden panel, cabinet, or any suitable surface.
It can also simply be placed on a custom stand or integrated into your own setup.
Project Goals
AMS Lite Pocket Edition was designed to:
- Reduce the footprint of the original AMS Lite.
- Provide greater flexibility when positioning the AMS.
- Make filament loading quicker and more convenient.
- Allow users to customize the PTFE tube routing to suit their setup.
- Support both a full 4-motor configuration and a more affordable 2-motor configuration.
Required AMS Lite Components
This project is a modification of the original AMS Lite and therefore requires either a complete AMS Lite to disassemble or the corresponding replacement parts purchased separately.
The main components required are:
- AMS Lite motherboard
- AMS Lite feeder motors
- AMS Lite power/data cable
- Filament Funnel Units and their original hardware
Replacement parts can be purchased directly from the Bambu Lab store. Before buying individual components, it is recommended to compare their total cost with the price of a complete AMS Lite, as the actual savings depend on your country, currency, availability, and current promotions.
Two-Motor Configuration
The Pocket Edition can also be assembled using only two motors, installed in the two center positions while leaving the two outer positions of the M-Block empty.
This configuration reduces the number of components required when four filament channels are not needed. Depending on current prices, however, purchasing individual spare parts is not always less expensive than buying a complete AMS Lite.
Bill of Materials – Additional Hardware
The following hardware is required in addition to the parts recovered from the original AMS Lite.
Standard Version
- 6 × M3×16 screws
Top Mount
In addition to the Standard Version:
- 3 × M3×20 screws
Wall Mount
In addition to the Standard Version:
- 16 × M3×8 screws
- Suitable wall screws and anchors for your mounting surface
IKEA SKÅDIS Mount
In addition to the Standard Version:
- 16 × M3×8 screws
Dimensions
Approximate dimensions of the Pocket Edition:
- Width: 165 mm
- Depth: 75 mm
- Height: 140 mm
When installed using either the Wall Mount or IKEA SKÅDIS Mount, the Pocket Edition extends approximately 125 mm from the mounting surface, depending on the selected configuration and PTFE tube routing.
For the Top Mount, simply add the Pocket Edition height above the printer to determine the total required clearance.
PTFE Tube Routing
The PTFE tubes can be routed:
- Directly from the front.
- From the rear.
- Along either side of the Pocket Edition with a smooth bend.
The design is intentionally flexible, allowing each user to adapt the tube routing to their own printer layout and spool placement.
Important Information
Keep the PTFE tubes between the Pocket Edition and the printer as short as reasonably possible while avoiding tight bends or kinks.
Excessively long PTFE tubes increase friction during filament loading and unloading. Over time, this may place additional stress on the feeder motors and could eventually lead to loading errors.
The AMS Lite is designed as an affordable filament management system and therefore uses relatively small motors. The Pocket Edition has been thoroughly tested and operates reliably, but minimizing PTFE tube length is one of the best ways to ensure consistent performance.
The tubes should not be so short that they create sharp bends, nor so long that unnecessary friction is introduced. The ideal configuration is the one that allows the filament to travel with the least possible resistance.
