Bambu Reusable Spool – Ultra-Light, Reinforced, Reinvented

This is a reinvented reusable spool design for Bambu refill spools (and other compatible brands). It uses a completely different concept than any other design on this site. Do you think this is “marketing fluff” ? Read on ! 🙂

Ultra-Lightweight, with Reinforcement Ribs (Bonus: Cool-Looking)

Most spool designs (and especially lightweight designs) are not as strong as the factory spool, the discs easily bend laterally and this may create filament tangles. Why is this ? Due to technical challenges, all of the other designs print the two discs with the outside face on the print bed. This prevents any kind of 3D reinforcements to be made to the spool disc. Plus, your spools may look unpleasant if you use glue on the print bed or if you don’t have a perfect first layer.

Not anymore. This design solves the difficult technical issues and prints the discs with the inside face on the bed, which opens up huge possibilities, like reinforcement ribs, lighter weight, faster printing and spools that simply look cool.

As a result of the new concept, this design uses about half the filament of some of the “lightweight” designs you will find (about 85g) and prints in under 3 hours !

Identical Halves

Unlike any other design you will find, the two halves of the spool are identical. Simply print a bunch of halves and stash them in a box. No need to match them.

Stackable Design

Have you noticed how much space empty refill spools usually take ? You can’t really stack them or pack them. This design has FLAT discs – you can store a bunch of them in a small box !

Assembly and Disassembly

The design is comprised of two discs and 3 pins. One of the pins has a notch which goes into the refill spool.

To assemble: (preferably on a table) slide the pins into one of the discs, place the refill roll over the pins (make sure the the pin notch goes into the refill slot), then put the remaining disc over the refill roll with the holes aligned with the pins and press on the disc until you hear a satisfying click from all three pins. That’s it.

To disassemble (without tools): from the inside of the spool’s inner bore press on each pin prongs until they are close enough to release the pin from the hole. I recommend to use both hands and enter from both sides of the spool.

Other Information

An A1 Mini version is also included. I loved my A1 Mini and I was very unhappy when I couldn’t print some of my favorite designs, so with every design I try to make it A1 Mini compatible.
